Shinzo Abe was the Prime Minister of Japan, 2012-2020. His maternal grandfather was a member of the international criminal syndicate Yakuza. He was the victim of a failed assassination attempt in August 2000. Some of the people involved were brought to justice. The attempted assassination was ordered by a Yakuza faction, Kudō-kai from Fukuoka. Motoshi Takano was sentenced to 12 years in prison and was released some time around the year 2020.
Shinzo Abe`s former minister of Justice Katsuyuki Kawai was condemned for rigged election for a seat in the Upper House of the Japan`s Diet. He withdrew his appeal against the conviction in the fall of 2021.
One important aspect is the type of security current and former dignitaries benefit from and the particular security detail who provided the security for Shinzo Abe today.
It is unclear whether the security for the political event for today was provided by private armed bodyguards or by them and, in cooperation, by the state agents.
Unconfirmed video footage published on Twitter seems to identify two gunshots from the assailant, a 42-year Japanese national with a military background, the Maritime Self Defense Force, that is the Japanese Navy. The first gunshot did not seem to trigger an immediate response from the security team and the attacker was a few meters away from Shinzo Abe.
After the Second World War which saw Japan occupied by the United States, the new Constitution provided a self-defense composition of the Japanese Armed Forces, forbidding the possession of nuclear capacities and an offensive doctrine of the Japanese Army.
We should not use our full Western mindset in trying to understand what happened today in Japan but some major aspects should be underlined:
1. the domestic intelligence agency in Japan is called the Public Security Intelligence Agency, PSIA
2. PSIA may have the legal obligation of collecting intelligence concerning threats to current and former Japan dignitaries, among other duties
3. PSIA is under the authority of the Ministry of Justice which saw its former Minister brought to justice for election irregularities
4. The Japanese society is based on honour and personal loyalties to institutional patrons.
5. It is possible that elements of the PSIA loyal to Katsuyuki Kawai or to Yakuza or to a Yakuza faction or to another interested party to have conspired in the assassination plot. Political assassinations are not that rare in Japan. A famous victim of a successful assassination was the mayor of Nagasaki in 2007.
6. the full force of the Japan intelligence and armed forces will not be unleashed against the plotters as the victim is a former controversial dignitary, not a current one and Shinzo Abe was successful in making enemies not only among his own party, but also among the military and state apparatus, among the Japanese political factions and among the neighboring countries: China, Russia and North Korea. Shinzo Abe was the promoter of close relations between Japan, a China rival, and India, a China rival as well. It is unconfirmed that the assassin had a Chinese background. Shinzo Abe established the Quad Alliance between the United States, India, Japan and Australia.
7. one should question why the security at the event where he was shot was so limited when there had been an assassination attempt against him in the past.
Why is the assassination of Shinzo Abe relevant to Romania?
1. a failure in the Japan`s intelligence agencies could lead to a sentiment of mistrust on behalf of its NATO and Asia allies
2. Shinzo Abe was the victim of a Romanian shameful political drama when he came to visit Romania and the Romanian Prime Minister who was to meet him refused to do so because he had just been sacked by the Romanian Socialist Party, aligned with Moscow`s and, closer to the present, with Beijing`s geostrategic operations of influence in the NATO periferies
3. Yakuza is known to money laundering and Romania is the perfect country to do so while the Romanian most powerful institutions reek of coruption and incompetence. The Italian Mafia was proven to invest huge amounts of money in Romania in order to get clean money.
All in all the Japanese people are known to mourn silently, but this tragic event sent shockwaves not only in Japan, Asia, in the West and in other parts of the world, but also posed a serious challenge to current and former dignitaries in the hot places of the planet such as Russia, China, North Korea, Pakistan and India, where there are internal turmoils with factions struggling to depose the current head of states and governments.
In Romania dignitaries are protected by three layers of security each focusing on a concentrical geographical sphere. The Protection and Security Service collects its own intelligence concerning the threats to dignitaries` protection but also receives information from the Ministry of the Interior and from the Romanian domestic intelligence agency.
I express my deepest condolences to the Abe family and to the Japanese people for the tragic and brutal loss of a clear mind and a true statesman.
